Ever wanted to learn a new language?

BSL Level 1

iSign, (the British Sign Language institute of Al Isharah) are a ‘Signature’ approved centre that will be offering classes in British Sign Language (BSL) Level 1, 2, 3 and 4!

Courses start this November 2020 and will be 30 weeks long. Due to the current Covid situation, sessions may be taught online.

A range of topics will be taught including how to communicate when meeting people, using numbers, weather, conversational BSL at home, getting around at work or in college.

Learning British Sign Language will teach you important skills that you can bring to your existing role, whether you work in a service environment, education, hospitality or elsewhere. If you are an employer you can arrange for your staff to learn British Sign Language (BSL) or deaf awareness to make your business more accessible.

On successfully completing of this course, you will have the ability to converse about day to day issues in BSL.

Units in Level 1:

  • BSL101 : Introduction to BSL, meeting people, weather, transport etc.
  • BSL102: Conversational BSL at home, people, animal, objects, using numbers, interest.
  • BSL103: Communication in BSL in everyday life, at school, college, work, getting information and getting around


All assessments are class based and will take place during class times. After successfully completing the course and passing all modules, you will be issued with a Level 1 certificate by Signature, the UK’s leading awarding body for deaf communication qualifications in the UK.

Entry requirements

This is a beginners course so there is NO requirement of prior knowledge of BSL. BSL competence standards do however include requirements for candidates to have sufficient sight, manual dexterity, facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL.

It is currently scheduled to take place on Thursday* evenings from 6.30-8.30pm
